Marangu Route is one of the most popular routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and is the only route that offers hut accommodation instead of camping. This makes it a comfortable and well-structured option, especially for first-time climbers.

The route follows the same path for ascent and descent, offering gradual trails through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the icy summit zone.

3. Gradual Daily Treks

Daily hiking hours range from 4 to 7 hours, except on summit day, which is longer and more demanding. The pace is slow and steady to support acclimatization.

4. Changing Landscapes

Expect to walk through four distinct ecological zones:

  • Rainforest with wildlife sightings

  • Moorland with panoramic views

  • Alpine desert with dramatic terrain

5. High-Altitude Challenge

Itinerary

FULL ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to hotel. Pre-climb briefing, gear check, and preparation.

Day 2: Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut (2,720 m)
Trekking through lush rainforest with chances to see colobus monkeys.
Distance: ~8 km | Time: 4–5 hours

Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Hike through moorland with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Distance: ~12 km | Time: 6–7 hours

Day 4: Acclimatization Day – Horombo Hut
Optional hike toward Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge, then return to Horombo Hut for acclimatization.

Day 5: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,703 m)
Trek across the alpine desert to Kibo Hut, preparing for the summit attempt. Early dinner and rest.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
Midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak via Gilman’s Point. Celebrate at the summit and descend to Horombo Hut.
Time: 10–14 hours

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate
Final descent through rainforest to the park gate and transfer back to hotel.
